He is the One-- RJD January 2013

Taken from 1/01/1997

God is the One who holds all the answers to our questions about the complex issues of life and yet He is the One who responds to these questions with simplicity. He responds to my questions I have with “Trust Me;” with “My grace is sufficient for you;” with “I AM God.”

Two days ago, I bought five napkin rings to go with my Christmas table cloth and napkins. I purchased five because last week we had Christmas Eve dinner at my dad and stepmother’s home, as we usually do. (I chose five because of my husband, our son, myself and the two of them.)
This past year has been one of serious illness for both of them. I can only trust God to allow them both to surmount their respective illnesses and be here for us to have another Christmas. At the same time, I know that all this is in God’s hands. And for that I am very thankful.

Update: At the time of this journal entry my dad was receiving radiation treatments for Colon Cancer. The previous May, my stepmother had been diagnosed with a second round of Breast Cancer. I had to take her to treatment four days a week. Her sister took her the fifth day.
I had September, October and most of November ‘to myself’ (getting things back to ‘normal’). During this time I also had to see about a first cousin of my dad who experienced seizures from childhood. In the first three months of 1997, each of them had a stay in the hospital.
We had one more Christmas together. God did answer my prayer as I had asked. I just realized that fact as I reread this old journal entry.

  3. My beloved Daddy died in 1997--also from colon cancer (or more precisely, from surgery for it). I get the prayers, the mercy He gave you, the faith in which you did a small thing--buying napkin rings--and He met you in that sweet last Christmas.

    1. Jeskmom: I thank you for stopping by. God speaks to us as we go through the valleys of our lives. We lost my dad 2 1/2 years ago. He had a stroke as he slept. He was a resident of a nursing home for almost ten years. God helped through some rough times with my dad. He was there for me.

  4. I love how going back to our old journals often reveals answered prayer that we did not even connect before! Sweet!
