Now
about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James
and went up on the mountain to pray. And as he was praying, the appearance of
his face was altered, and his clothes became dazzling white. Luke 9:28-29
(ESV)
About one week before this event took place, Jesus had
spoken to His disciples. Peter had confessed that Jesus was “the Christ of God”.
Jesus then told them all about how they had to deny themselves, take up their cross,
and follow Him. What these three disciples saw greatly impressed them. Words
tumbled out of Peter’s mouth that tell us how surprised he was to see Moses and
Elijah talking with Jesus.
Let’s not judge Peter harshly. We have had times when we
were so amazed that we said things that we hadn’t thought through. I know I
have. Let’s look closer at the scene. Jesus had invited Peter, James and John to
accompany Him to the mountain. They might have felt humbled by this honor. They
could have thought that they would spend time alone with Jesus and pray. I am certain that these three disciples
remembered this event for the rest of their lives.
Whenever we think we are going to have time with God, we
may get a special benefit that we don’t expect. We must always thank Him for those
God sent times.
Absolutely. I've had some remarkable times with the Lord, some have been for me only and others I've felt led to share. We serve a great and mighty God!
