Mustard Seeds and Faith

“ . . . I tell you the truth, if you have faith as

small as a mustard seed, you can say

to this mountain, Move from here

to there, and it will move. Nothing will

be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20 NIV

How much faith does it take to live on this earth? Can our faith grow and become stronger?

Jesus says our faith, even as small as a mustard seed, will allow us to overcome issues no matter the size.

The mustard seed is very tiny. But, given the proper nourishment and care, one seed will mature into a plant (The NIV says tree.) large enough to house birds. (Matthew 13:31-32) I wonder how long it takes to grow a mustard “tree”.

When I was a child, a lot of women had mustard seed charms dangling from their wrist watches. Since I became an adult, I notice no one has them anymore. A friend gave me one a few years ago. I put it on a necklace chain with a cross my husband gave me. Over time, I misplaced the mustard seed.

What is the proper nourishment needed to grow our faith. A plant or tree needs roots, Christian believers also need roots. We need to be grounded in God’s Word. A growing organism requires food and water, God’s children require fellowship of like- minded people to foster their growth in the faith. Members of the plant kingdom attain growth with the right amount of sunshine. Followers of God benefit from spending time in His presence through prayer.

When we fellowship with other believers, study God’s Word, and prayerfully lay our requests at His feet, our faith will grow.

  2. Beautiful post.
I enjoy a nightly dose of Oswald Chambers' unabridged works and a reference Bible to read the sources.

Lord willing, I might get through half of it before He takes me home!!

Blessings for a peaceful New Year.
