June Reflections

   VBS 2022

We had Vacation Bible School for three nights the middle of the month. It was a small school, but the children seemed to enjoy the different activities. The decorations were outstanding.

However, there was one glitch. Our Children’s Ministries Director works a full-time job at a group home. On Thursday, the residents were all sick. Friday, our Children’s Director called my best friend and said she had COVID. That night, all the adults working with the VBS pitched in and did a little extra to help.

I have been dealing with congestion since then.  I have had two “good days” this week.

 Husband’s Health

Jim has been dealing with a knee problem. He is going to have a TOTAL knee replacement. This did not surprise me. We were to see the surgeon but had to reschedule because he had the onset of pneumonia. .

His surgery will be in early August. Please keep us in your prayers.

 A New Ministry Effort

In our church, we have had several people lose an adult child to death. One elderly lady lost her son last December and a month later lost her husband.

Some of us felt the need to begin a Bereavement Visitation Ministry. My best friend and I ordered some very well-written pamphlets to share with those we visit. Due to my being ill and some other things. We have not been able to do any visitation.

 Writing Efforts

Sometime ago, I found a forum for Christian writers. I joined the group. For some time, I chose to access it for the fellowship. I was questioning myself after I did not do well getting my book into people’s hands.

I recently started posting a few things I have written and have gotten positive responses from the other members.

From time to time, I search for a (paying) outlet for my writing. I have not been able to find one that is of the Christian genre that I feel comfortable with.

A Possible Blog Break

I will take a blog break when Jim has his surgery and during his recuperation. I don’t know how long he will be unable to get around. I will let you know more as I learn of the procedures involved.

A Cure for Anxiety

saatchiart

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will guard your hearts and mind through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 (NKJV)

Paul gives the believers at Philippi some very astute advice in this passage.

 Be anxious for nothing

He tells them and us to not worry about anything. Some of us find that to be hard to do.

in everything by prayer and supplication

He tells his readers to pray and to petition God with our concerns. God wants to hear from us about what bothers us.

 with thanksgiving

We are to thank God for all He does for us and all He gives us. When He guides us through a difficult circumstance, we must tell Him, “Thank You.” In our earthly lives, we try to thank someone who does something we don’t expect or something that is nice.

We should do the same when God guides us through or answers a prayer.

let your requests be made known to God

When we have anxieties, fears, or concerns, we must take them to the LORD first. I recently had a concern that I felt was weighing me down. I prayed several times about the need. I texted a message to some of my prayer group. I told them I couldn’t talk about it. I received responses that told me they were praying for my need.

The next morning, my heart felt lighter. I found out later that the cause of the anxiety had been taken away.

the peace of God, which passes all understanding,

We will never fully understand the peace of God while we are on this earth. All I know is His peace has wondrous effects on those who receive it.

will guard your hearts and mind through Christ Jesus.

God guards the hearts and minds of those who surrender to Him and choose to continue to live for Him whatever circumstances enter their lives.

February Reflections

Etsy

I realize this is a long post. I apologize for that. I tried to edit it down. Please forgive me. I will try to do better about this.

Snowy and Cold

Winter got here this past month. Phil predicted six more weeks of winter, no big surprise to me. Before we had snow, we had cold temperatures. When the snow came, we still had cold temperatures.  We had three visits of winter to our area The last time, we had ice and freezing rain before the snow.

Physical Therapy

Per my Radiation Doctor, I started physical therapy for lymphedema, a side effect from the lumpectomy. I saw the therapists three times a week from the middle of January for  six weeks.

After one session and a day of home exercises, I felt better that I have in quite a while. Good sleep and the absence of pain were causes of the change. However, the morning after session two, I felt a lot of pain. I finally figured it out. I needed to wear my fleece jacket over my sweater etc. Once I did that, my arm stopped hurting.

I received a compression garment that extends from my wrist almost to my shoulder. It felt like a cast on my arm. I wore it 23 hours a day until my compression sleeve arrived.

 My “New Normal”

I received my compression sleeve and glove. I also got some news I wasn’t expecting. I will have to wear this sleeve and glove until Jesus calls me home. At night, I wear the compression garment and hand piece, also until Jesus calls me home.

I texted those in my local prayer group and told them the surprising news. My best friend texted back that this sounded like my ‘new normal’, hence the heading of this section.

An Invitation to a Poetry Group

I am a member of a Christian writers’ forum. The site recently went to another server. The result is a crisper page and reformatting the appearance of the pages.

When I logged on the second time after the redo, I had an invitation to a poetry group awaiting me (for those who write read or enjoy poetry.) I used to write poetry and am considering writing some again. It may help me to get out of my “writers block”.

 Some Pleasant Surprises

On the day before Valentines Day, it was my turn to give the Children’s Moments message.

I chose to have a Valentine message, bringing out the love of God. I used the blog entry of February 14th and edited it for children. The Children’s Director thought it was good. After Church, I had two women tell me it was great.

Our Sunday school class leader was back with us that day. She gave me a gift, a book entitled “graceland” by Ruth Chou Simons. It is a devotional book with added scripture readings and the author’s artwork. As I looked through it, the artwork echoed the scriptures. This book is interactive. At the beginning, to get the most out of it, the author suggests certain auxiliary items to enhance the experience.  The book is divided into four sections, one for each season. I have added this book to my pile to read.

 Valentine’s Day Mission

Last year, our church presented our neighboring nursing home with Valentines etc. for 90 residents. This year, our pastor announced that the church has been asked about doing it again. The congregation brought in enough items for 103 residents.

A Different Type of Writing

During my physical therapy evaluation, the therapist explained something to me about the cost of an essential item used in the treatment of lymphedema not being covered by Medicare. She has been to Washington D.C. and talked with senators about the importance of having this item covered by Medicare. There are people, women, and men, who would benefit from this bill being enacted into legislation. I felt the need to do something to try to help. I wrote three letters, one to each of our senators and one to our representative about the importance of this act to those who are affected by this condition. This neglected act is named, Lymphedema Treatment Act.

There is a website for this bill. One page lists activities people can do to help garner attention of the government about this need. One item was that each person with this condition write their story about lymphedema. My physical therapist encouraged me to do it. I did just that.

Substitute Teaching Sunday School

Due to illness in my Sunday school leader’s family, they had their family Christmas celebration on January 2. I knew ahead of time. We were between study books. I chose to be daring and teach a lesson based on one of my blog entries, (NEW).

September Reflections

Shining Mom

 Surprise, Surprise

September was a surprising month. The weather was more like July than September.

I had been patiently (?) waiting for two copies of a devotional book I ordered. They finally arrived on the 29th. I made several calls to the publisher about them.

I received a new 5G cell phone that put me on a huge learning curve. It took a while, but I believe I have learned to navigate on it. It works somewhat differently.

 Medical Stuff

I noticed something that concerned me around one of my incision marks. I had a follow-up mammogram. I was due to have one this fall anyway, we just did it early. What I was seeing was NOT a sign of disease. For this I am thankful.

Writing, Journaling

I believe I have my word for 2022 chosen. I also have my monthly themes in mind.  I will share these in my December Reflections post.

I am enjoying journaling thoughts about some scriptures from “The Beauty of an Uncluttered Mind” by Carla Gasser. Here is the link to my previous post. beauty of an uncluttered mind. Each of these scriptures is related to one of the Fruit of the Spirit found in Galatians 5.

 Prayer Requests

With all the upheaval in our world, we must pray for revival, for God’s hand of guidance on His children.

There is a lot of heartache in this world beyond COVID. Hurricanes, Volcanoes erupting, Family Crises, Racial Tensions, Health Problems, Political Unrest, just to name a few.

Re-establishing Good Habits

I am struggling to return to some good habits in my life.  Also trying to establish some good habits. I must say that some of those bad habits are not because of COVID.

 My gift for my friend

My friend Anna now lives in an assisted living facility in southern Indiana. I made her a wreath for the door of her apartment. A gentleman from church and Anna’s cousin, also from church, went down to see her one Friday late last month. She called me late that afternoon and thanked me for it. She said it made her cry (Tears of happiness). At first she didn’t realize I had made it. She said it was the prettiest wreath on her floor.

Serve One Another In Love

Pinterest

You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature, rather serve one another in love. Galatians 5:13 (NIV)

Paul writes to the Galatians that we are to serve one another in love. He warns them, and us, that our freedom should not be used in a questionable or sinful way.

How can we keep from causing hurt to others when we serve them? We should ask the LORD to guide us in our actions and our speech as well as our attitudes.

Sometimes we must engage what some call filters in our speech. (Gauge how something might sound if we spoke certain things.)

Other times, we must just do our jobs and choose not to listen to things that cause us to slip up and fall into the ‘world mode’.  This takes some maturity in Christ.

We must remember that God loves those we serve and those who serve with us as much as He loves us.

The Gift of Faith

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

                                                                                                                Hebrews 11:1-2 NIV

The writer of Hebrews gives us an interesting concept of the meaning of faith.

He says that it is our being sure of what we hope for. Does this mean that when we are sure that something will happen as we want it to? Or does it mean that we must believe that the thing we want will transpire according to God’s desire and plan?

When our faith is in God, we can be sure that His Will is the most important and is what will transpire.

When we feel God’s presence around us, we can be certain that He is there, and He will guide us through the issues we face in this fallen world.

Several years ago, I heard a neat acrostic for the word faith:

                        Forsaking

                        All

                        In

                        Trusting

                        Him.

The writer of Hebrews says it best: “And without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Hebrews 11:6 (NIV)

Spiritual Gifts

Snow aftermath in late April

Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is in prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith, if it is in serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.   Romans 12:7-8 (NIV)

Have you ever met someone who helped make life easier for you? I am speaking of when we are in difficult circumstances.

In dealing with nurses, I decided a long time ago they are called by God and given special gifts to perform their many tasks.

The Apostle Paul gives us a picture of the attitude with which a person needs to practice his or her gift. Have you ever been around someone who did not seem to be in the right position for their makeup? I have had that experience in several situations of my life. It was not a fun place to be.

On April 21, I had an appointment for my third day of radiation treatments. (I had two a day.) About 20 minutes before my appointed time, the phone rang. It was the nurse from the Cancer Care Building. Overnight, our state was hit with a very-late-season snowstorm. The place lost power due to the heaviness of that snow. This caused the scanning machine they used on me not to work properly. They needed me to come 30 minutes later for my morning session.

The whole time I was in treatment that morning, I felt cared about as well as cared for. They did not seem to know when the problem would be remedied. We were all in this together. They exercised their gifts to help me through that week. They had to use a different machine on me for two days (four treatments).

I learned several years ago that Spiritual gifts were given to us by the Holy Spirit for our employees, not our enjoyment. I believe we followers of Jesus should learn to use our gifts for the sake of the Kingdom every day.

January Reflections

Amazon.com

January started off with a different feel to it. I was wondering what 2021 would bring us. It was just under a week and we found out.

I spent some time planning further about my blog entries. I thought my NEO, portable word processor quit on me. I still have not got that figured out yet. I will have to experiment with it. I tried the “dictate” feature of my word processor on my laptop. It does not recognize certain phrases. My NEO straightened itself out; maybe it was something I did to cause the original issue.

I had some personal maintenance I had to take care of. I saw my audiologist and had a hearing test. I will be receiving my new hearing aids in early February. I had to have lab work done ahead of my Wellness Visit with my primary care doctor. One week later, I had that appointment. I learned a lot during that visit. I came away with paperwork for two more tests. I am scheduled for those tests this week.

She, my doctor, took a lot of time with me. I had three questions I wanted to ask her and explain my feelings about what I thought about certain issues I faced.

I had a goal of reading at least 12 books this year. As of this initial writing, I have finished Fervent by Priscilla Shirer. I may want to re-read this at least once a year. Also, reread one called, God, I don’t Understand. I presently am reading three devotional books each day. My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers, Daily Guideposts 2021 by Guideposts, Mornings with Jesus also by Guideposts. Reading them helps me with the COVID issues of sadness.

I was able to get appointments for us for our COVID vaccines. This first week of February is terribly busy for us. More on that later. We had a weekend of what the weathermen call, “Winter Mix”, this was in three waves, Snow, Rain, and More Snow.

Everlasting Father

Switchbacks.org

He shall be called. . . Everlasting Father. . . Isaiah 9:6 (NIV)

Jesus, the Son of God, is eternal. There is no end to His kingdom. And He is our heavenly Father. We can tell Him anything and He will understand what our thinking is. If we look at something incorrectly, He gently guides us through how we are supposed to think, and He forgives us. He does these things out of His love and grace for us.

He willingly forgives us because of His great, undying love for us. His is our Father forever.

Saints in My Life

Powerofhumility.org

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, Hebrews 12:1 (NIV)

This past Sunday was All Saints Day. It is a day set aside to remember and honor those believers who have gone on before us. My best friend lost her older sister in May of 2014. That November, she was invited to her sister’s church for a special service honoring those who had gone on to heaven in the previous twelve months.  She said the service gave her closure.

In 2019, our church received a new pastor who chose to observe All Saints Day. This was the first time for several of us to have a service like it. One of the blogs I subscribe to suggested we write about this observance and possibly write about those saints in our lives.

When I was a young adult, I met, Crystal, a wonderful Christian lady who loved the LORD. Her health was not always the best. Her children went their own way, her grandchildren eventually did the same. She loved them anyway. She stood by them when they messed up. She loved me when I had some issues. As I was told, she was in church one Sunday. When she and her husband left the church, she told him she had to go to the hospital. It was at the hospital that Jesus came and took her home.  Her son and his wife returned to the LORD. This daughter-in-law passed on. Her son’s second wife was active in the same church with him. I know Crystal watched from heaven as her children returned to Him.

As I grew in the LORD, I started attending a church about a half-mile from our home. There I met Evelyn, the organist, who lent me a book by William Murray, son of Madelyn Murray O’Hare. (My Life Without God). It made we wonder why someone who looked so saintly would own such a book. She told me about herself, how she had to raise her daughter alone. She had to end her marriage. Her daughter was quite young at the time. She had to be both mother and father to that daughter. She never told her in-laws about things that occurred. Each Saturday, she called him to see how he was doing. When she received word that her ex-husband had died, she and her daughter drove back to their original hometown, two states away, to attend his funeral.

When we started attending our present church (pre-merger), we met Barbara who was a caregiver for her middle-aged adult son, Greg. He was the victim of a terrible wreck when he was a teenager. While Greg was in the hospital, her younger son, age 12, was hit by a car and died. Greg went to college. Had a good job. He married; he and his wife had a son. They went through a divorce. After this, Barbara cared for him in her home. (I am uncertain how many years she cared for him.) A few years ago Greg had to go to a nursing home. In time, this lady went to the same facility.

I found out about a month ago that her husband had a difficult time with diabetes. He lost a leg and was hospitalized for a lengthy time. He later had indications that the diabetes was going to cause him to lose his other leg. She cared for him at home. The whole time I was in fellowship with her, she never complained about what she had to do.

I have learned a lot about these dear women. I learned they loved the LORD, and they did not complain about the paths they had to take during their earthly lives. Without realizing it, I have learned not to complain about wherever God leads me.

Thoughts About Life

“Am I my brother’s keeper?”
Genesis 4:9 (NIV)

This year, 2020, has given us a different perspective about things. We have seen the CORONA VIRUS spread around the world.  Some people do not take it seriously. We have seen states close and then reopen only to have the virus wreak more havoc in our nation. Those that do not take it seriously choose not to wear masks. Others chose to have parties and go to the beaches and lakes over the Memorial Day and July 4th holidays. I recently heard of a city one area of which had a “Block Party” and had 600 participants.

As I initially write this, our nation has lost 138,649 lives. As I think on these numbers, I think of my cousin’s passing in early April. His daughter, who works at the nursing facility where he lived, also had COVID and was quarantined at the time he passed on and had to plan his service “long distance.” Each night on the news channel I watch, several of the journalists pay tribute to some of those who have succumbed.

As I sit here in my home, (I prefer to stay in as much as possible. I still have some issues with my ankle.) However, when I do go out, I wear a mask. Hubby has a supply of them in the console of our car. I see people who work in these places who have health issues. I talk to these people and feel I must try to do my part to protect them as well as myself.

Yes, we are our brother’s (or sister’s) keepers. In our community, we have numerous agencies that depend on people who are able to volunteer or to donate to help those who are unable to have food for their families, homes for themselves, and those who are in the process of turning their lives around.

Our governor here in Indiana has mandated masks to be worn by all over the age of 8 years old. This will go into effect this coming Monday, July 28th.

God Stills the Waves

See the source image
Pinterest

O LORD, God Almighty, who is like you? You are mighty, O LORD
and your faithfulness surrounds you. You rule over the surging sea,
when its waves mount up, you still them. Psalm 89:8-9 (NIV)

There is no one like God. He has no peers. He has no equal. The psalmist, Ethan, tells us that God is mighty. God possesses great strength unequaled by anything in this world. His faithfulness is evident to all who know Him. It encompassed His being.

God is the only One who can cause the waves of the sea to obey. He stills them when they rage. In like manner, He makes our lives and hearts calm when we have turmoil threaten our serenity.

We all have times where things affect us in a way we might not like. We get depressed and have thoughts that are not our usual ones. We must look to God for the answers to those thoughts and questions that plaque us at those moments.

What are ways we can shed ourselves or these times we feel awash in our sad thoughts?
We can pray. We can search the scriptures for guidance. We might be able to find a peaceful setting- a park, a quiet pond, a serene area of your back yard. Maybe we can go for a walk. Just a change of pace or a change of scene can help.

We Need to Humble Ourselves

See the source image
Crosswalk.com

This is a repeat of an older post, with an additional thought or two.
Due to some concerns and anxieties that some of my friends and I have experienced, I found myself fretting over some issues I could not completely put out of my mind. I remembered this scripture and studied it again. Please bear with me as I explain what it means to me.

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:6-7 (ESV)

Humble yourselves--when we look at our habits, our ways, and our activities, through God’s eyes and compare them to His teachings and what He expects from us, we humble ourselves.

under the mighty hand of God under God’s direction. All our thoughts, words, and actions must come through the filters He gives us. (see Philippians 4:8-9)

at the proper time, -- God will act on our needs and the requests we make when He sees we are ready. We might have to grow closer to Him to understand what is happening around us.

he may exalt you; -- He will use his discretion to lift us up. He is the One who calls the shots, makes the decisions about circumstances in our lives.

casting-- Picture a fisherman as he throws his line into the water. He reaches back over his shoulder, rod in hand, placing his arm behind him or her. The angler brings that arm across his body. The line flies across the water. The hook lands a great distance from him or her.

all your anxieties-- I find the important word here is “ALL”. We are not to withhold any fear or concern from God. Nothing is too small or insignificant for God to handle.

because he cares for you. -- God made each of us. Because of that, He loves us. When we have times when we think no one cares about us God does care.
ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS:
During this time of shelter-in-place orders, things have been rather monotonous for a lot of my friends. However, we have had more time to spend with God and reading different devotional writers.
I have had time to listen to the news journalists and discovered that there are some out there in the world who seem to believe as I do. Our world needs to know that certain thoughts we hear are not correct and we still have to stand for God and for what is right.

Blessed are the Poor in Spirit

Blessed are the poor in spirit,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:1 (NIV)

What does Jesus mean when He says this?

I know a woman and two of her sisters who are poor by the standards of society, but I have heard of this Christian woman going out of her way to help others who had less. I also witnessed this same Christian woman console one of her sisters at a memorial service for one of their brothers.

I read of a Christian speaker and author tell of preparing to speak at a writer’s conference as he recovered from cancer treatment. He sent up a prayer to God saying, “Lord, I can’t do this.” The answer he received was simply, “You can’t, but now I can.”

As I compose this essay, I am reminded of times when I have ventured out ahead of the LORD and then got into trouble. Was that being poor in spirit? Definitely not.

Being poor in spirit simply means that we realize that we can’t do anything without the LORD guiding us.

As we await the time for re-opening our local church, some of us are hearing from different sources of information giving us conflicting dates. Some of us have decided we need to leave that decision up to the LORD.

How many times have we felt that we were in control and could do something without the LORD’s guidance? I know I have thought this and acted like I knew what I was doing. Only, my ‘plans’ failed.

All our plans must go through God. It is His decision that is paramount in all our lives.

Rest and Guidance

See the source image

He makes me lie down in green pastures,
He leads me beside quiet waters.

 Psalm 23:2 (NIV)

What does this verse mean to us who live in the 21st Century?

He makes me lie down
God allows us time to rest and recover from those times when we have suffered loss or have been harmed. When a family loses a loved one, Our Father allows them to grieve the loss.

 in green pastures
As children, we may have laid down in our yards and watched the clouds in the sky. I remember rolling down an embankment of grass and squealing with delight that it was a fun thing to do.
what He can do for us.

he leads me beside quiet waters.

God takes us, as He took David, into calming settings in order to talk to us. Have you ever watched fish in an aquarium?

When my stepmother underwent radiation therapy, the lobby of that area had two fish tanks built into the walls. I found it peaceful to watch as I waited for her daily treatment to be completed.

As we wait for the stay-at-home orders to be lifted, we must listen to God’s voice as He guides us through each of our days.

Blessed

,
Blessed are those who mourn,
For they shall be comforted.
Matthew 5:4 (NIV)

These words, spoken by Jesus, bring comfort to many people who grieve the loss of a loved one.

When a person goes into mourning, Jesus stands beside him or her, and brings comfort. He wraps His arms of love around each of them, draws them close, and whispers needed words into his or her ear.

This scripture speaks volumes to people in our nation during this time of the pandemic.

Those who mourn during these days could not be with their loved ones during their final hours on earth. This adds to their grief.

We don’t know how this Coronavirus got such a hold on our world. Another addition to their grief.

Many of those who lost their lives were elderly and unable to ‘fight back’. I find this personal. I lost a cousin to this disease. I have a couple of friends who each have mothers who are in the same health care facility.

Whatever the source of grief those who are mourning, may they find comfort in these ten words spoken by our LORD Jesus Christ.

Practicing our Faith

O

On a recent night, as I watched the news, I heard of a coach in a nearby town and his plan of keeping his team members in shape during the Coronavirus restrictions. What he did was create a Bingo-type board with certain actions to keep the players in shape and to help them not to become bored. This set me to thinking. Why couldn’t I create something similar for Christians to help them buoy their faith. This is what I came up with.
