How Do We Pray?

gethsemaneeclc.org

if My people who are called by My name

will humble themselves, and pray

and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways,

then I will hear from heaven,

and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

2 Chronicles 7:14 (NKJV)

When we pray to God, do we ask Him to approve our plans or do we ask Him to guide us in the way He wants us to go?

According to what I read in the above scripture:

1.) We must humble ourselves. Admit that we are imperfect, and we do not know it all.

2.) We must pray to Him, seeking <I>His</I> guidance.

3.) We must spend quantity time talking to God. We are not to make it a practice of praying “on the run”. We are not supposed to have an attitude of “catch You later, God.”

4.) We must repent (turn away) from our sinful, evil ways.

5.) God tells us if we take these steps, He will (a) hear from heaven, (b) forgive our sins, and (c)

 heal our land.

The above thoughts have become more real to me recently. I find that these thoughts and this question confront me when I have an issue with a topic or an issue that is close to my heart.

Through His Guidance

                                                                                 Pinterest

In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined to the

purpose of Him who works all things to the counsel of His will.

Ephesians 1:11 (NKJV)

In Jesus, we have received a gift from God, a gift determined by the LORD’s aim for us. God works all things in accordance to His will.

Our heavenly Father knows what He plans for each of His children. We learn His purpose for our lives through the experiences we have as we grow in Him, the spiritual gifts He gives us and through His guidance through our days.

Over the years, I have taken at least three Spiritual Gifts surveys. The results have guided me as I walk with Jesus. Some people find that those gifts change over time. Some of mine went from strong gifts that I could use and to waiting gifts that I could use if I could develop them.

Have you done a Spiritual Gifts survey?

Purpose in Season

Warner Sallman

To everything there is a season. A time for every purpose on earth.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NKJV)

God creates our live and gives us many epochs in each life He creates. As a person goes through life, he or she might go through certain stages.

As young adults, we study, we work, date, maybe marry.

As young marrieds, we work, provide for our families and care for our homes.

As parents, we care for, provide for and rear children.

As Empty Nesters, we rediscover favorite pastimes. and even learn new skills.

As Caregivers, we spend time caring for or helping older family members.

As Senior Citizens, we may volunteer for church or civic positions.

Each of these seasons have a purpose. God gives His children duties and tasks to perform. Each ‘season’ has a beginning and an end.

Since two weeks before the COVID lock down, I have had several health issues. It seems like one after another. I sincerely need to pray about finding God’s purpose about how He wants me to spend my days in this season I find myself.

Sometimes, all we can do is seek the LORD’s guidance and follow His leading.

Are any of you going through times like this?

God’s Plan

Microsoft Bing

For I know the thoughts [plans] that I think towards [have for] you,

says the LORD. Thoughts [plans] of peace not evil, to give

you a future and hope. Hebrews 29:11 (NKJV) [NI V]

The words in brackets are how I learned this verse.

The LORD has set in motion a time of exile for the Israelite people. They will be in bondage for 70 years, a life time to a lot of people now. How many generations of Israelite people lived in this bondage during those years?

Yet, God had plans for them. False prophets had misled them. One told the Israelite people the enslavement would last just two years. God took him out two months later.

God’s plans were positive-in the long run. The people had to learn some lessons and learn to respect God.

Recently, I came across the thought that what we see happening in our world today has come about because we have lost respect for God and the lessons we have needed to learn. This thought makes sense to me.

What do you think about this? Does God still have plans for His children? Will His children respond to God in a way that uplifts Him?

God Keeps Promises

Pinterest

Therefore know that the LORD your God,

He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant

and mercy for a thousand generations with those who

love Him and keep His commandments.

                                                                                        Deuteronomy 7:9 (NKJV)

Words of Moses to those Israelites who did not know of God’s attributes and goodness. (These pilgrims were 60 years old and younger.)[1] Deuteronomy means “retelling”

In this passage, Moses tells them that God is faithful not to just them and their parents but to those who love Him and keep His commandments for a thousand generations.

Moses states that God will keep His promises (covenants) and mercies for a very long time. (When I was a teenager, a youth group advisor said a generation was usually, on average, 26 years.)

There is a condition in this thought. The people must love God and keep His commandments. I once heard that if we break one of the Ten Commandments, we have broken them all. While this statement sounds harsh, I understand it. I believe it may have a domino effect.

It is the duty of God’s children to model Christlike behavior, to exemplify how He wants us to live our lives before others, and to speak loving words on His behalf.

Yes, we all fall short of these goals. When we fail, we need to seek His forgiveness and start over again. His grace and mercy allow us to do this.

What Will It Take?

This is a departure from this month's theme. I felt so moved by hearing an answer to my thought. Because of this experience, I am also journaling this verse, one phrase as a time.

##

quiet spirit

Recently, as I read our local newspaper, I became sad about the violence occurring in our cities, our nation, and our world: People unable to peacefully resolve their differences, others, carrying weapons going into schools and taking out the lives of defenseless children and those called to educate them.

Memorial Day weekend saw multiple mass shootings across our nation. These followed the Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo, New York tragedies.

As I was working in my kitchen, I wondered, “What will it take for order to come back to our world?” I received an answer to my question. “If my people. . .will humble themselves and pray.”

If My people who are called by My name,

The Lord is speaking about those who say they belong to Him.

            He knows our hearts.

will humble themselves

We must recognize our sin, confess it to Jesus and leave it with Him.

 and pray

Go before the LORD and ask Him to guide us, to help us conquer these sinful                issues.

 and seek my face.

Diligently look for the LORD. Spend quantity time with Him.

and turn from their wicked ways,

Renounce and forsake the evil thoughts, and actions. Move away from anything              that God dislikes in us. Repent from the questionable language and behaviors.

then I will hear from heaven

The LORD patiently waits to hear us calling out to Him. He listens whenever we call upon Him.

and will forgive their sin

God, in return, will forgive His people of their sin. He will not remember them.

 and heal their land

God will heal those things that continually vex His people.

Some things to think on:

1.         Do we need to humble ourselves?

2.         Have we harbored “Christian” sins in our hearts?

3.         Do we truly pray, seeking His will or do we dictate to God what we want?

4.         Do we spend quantity time in prayer as we  seek His guidance, or do we pray on the run?

5.         If we have any bad thoughts and habits, do we want to give them up?

God’s Kindness and His Mercy

quiet spirit

For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts, and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward men appeared, not by works of righteousness, which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit. Titus 3:3-5 (NKJV)

When God chooses to extend His kindness and love, He exercises His mercy toward us who are sinners. He does so through the Holy Spirit. None of us are worthy of His love but it is because of His mercy that God extends them to us.

During these times of upheaval in our nation and our world, we must rely on the kindness of God to allow us to keep calm in the light of the circumstances that cause great anxiety in our daily lives.

God will guide us through these difficult times, whether they are international, national, or even personal in scope. We must accept His kindness and love to be able to be “more than conquerors.” In today’s world. It is only then that we are able to rise above the circumstances that vex us.

May Reflections

Wiki Calendar

Reactions to the Weather

It appears that we did not have spring this year. It went right into summer. This year, I was able to remember to talk to my husband about getting the yard rolled. He contacted the people who mow for us. With the rain we had for most of a week, the young man’s dad got it done the following week and it is nice to be able to walk outside without fear of falling.

 Mother’s Day Postponed

With both of us being ill, my having COVID, hubby possible having COVID, we decided to wait until we were over it before our son could come home. On the day after Mother’s Day, I tested negative. I still wanted to rest up. The weather was predicted to be bad the following weekend. Our son called just before the second weekend after Mother’s Day. The weather forecast looked gloomy. We decided he would come for part of Memorial Day weekend.

Review Book

Just after I tested negative, I received another book to review. “The Path to Peace”By Ann Swindell. I literally could not put it down. I will write more about it later.

An Answer to Prayer

The Sunday after my negative COVID test, I got back to church. I looked across the foyer and saw a woman who had lost her husband a couple of months earlier. The had stopped coming earlier in the year. I had visited her shortly after she lost her husband. In my prayer list, I keep a page designated for those who are grieving. I recorded a note in my journal’s weekly praise page.

 Praise Note

We drove to Indy to see my Gynecological Oncologist one Tuesday. At the end of her examination, she told me the chance of my tumor coming back was ZERO. Also, after my next visit in November, my visits will be spaced out to just once a year. If I had any confetti, I would be throwing it.

 Personal Concerns

I have some personal concerns that seem to not go away. Please pray for me as I await the various outcomes.

Please pray for Uvalde Texas and other places that have had mass shootings

I don’t usually write about current events on here. However, the Uvalde shooting is such a horrific event that I must ask you to pray for those families that lost children at the hands of someone who had access to assault rifles. In our local newspaper today, June 1st was an article about the numerous shootings over the holiday weekend. I did learn something I didn’t know. The authorities define ‘mass shootings’ as incidents where four or more people are shot.

Joy Inexpressible

www/joyconcerts.com

In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love. Though you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls. 1 Peter 1:6-9 (NKJV)

Believers have times of grief due to trials entering their lives. Knowing Jesus does not make us exempt from the hurts of our earthly life.

However, the apostle Peter tells us because of the realness of our faith, being more valuable than gold, we will receive God’s praise (commendation or approval), honor (possibly crowns at the judgment seat of Christ) and glory (a precious, enduring, and genuine faith) because of our suffering.

Like Peter’s readers, we have not actually seen Jesus. However, we rejoice with a joy we cannot describe to anyone else.

Prayer: Father God; We thank You for our salvation, for your guidance through our days. We thank You that, when we see You, you will honor us with various crowns for our faith while we walk this earth. In the Name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

May Reflections

www.grainger.com/ Office_Supplies

I turned a corner in May. I realized why I was hurting so much. I had one weekend of being ill with running a temp. The next weekend I saw I had bruising around one of the incision areas. As of this writing, the area is practically back to

normal.

Because of the new med, I was prescribed, I had to go through several side effects. They let up and now I do not have any known issues with that med.

I did not do very much writing. I did do some preliminary work on a lesson I have to give in November at our women’s circle meeting. I also played around with an idea about Simon of Cyrene. Need to get back to it.

I have done some baking, gluten-free muffins. One week, I made some for a friend as a part of a birthday surprise for her. I add cranberries to the batter. Two days later, I had to make some for Hubby. Then, I was supposed to make a third batch two days later. (I had no cranberries; therefore, I did not make that third batch.)

I finally got my pink planter filled with silk flowers. I came home from being gone and saw that Hubby cleaned off most of the porch and placed that new arrangement on the table out there.

We have our rock garden festooned with flags and flowers. Hubby wanted me to take a picture of it. The wind was standing the flags out straight.  I surprised him by taking this video.

I Got To Church Yesterday!

Cross Roads UMC Anderson IN

Yesterday, I was able to go to church. My friend Martha said she could pick me up; I live on her way. She has been going to the early service (8:30). I managed to wake myself up and get ready.  It was nice to see some of my fellow worshipers again. The above picture is what we see when we approach the church from the west. It sits on a hill. The entrance is on the other side of the building. There are three crosses at the bricked area.

This year, the pastor has chosen to have a Lenten Bible Study on Sunday nights. Sunday night service is something that our church has not had as a general rule. Several of us have these services.  It was an interesting study.

At the end of the morning service, we sang the hymn, "Were You There?" This hymn made me feel humble and has caused me to ponder my relationship with Jesus. The following is from YourTube.

New Song

www.sheetmusic.com

I waited patiently for the LORD he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit. Out of the mud and mire, he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD. Psalm 40:1-3 (NIV)

David penned these words. It speaks of God’s rescuing him from his sins

God gave David new words to say and sing as he praised the LORD. David believes that others will see what has happened in David’s life and they will want to follow and live for the LORD.

I waited patiently for the LORD,

David learned what each of us must learn. He learned to wait patiently on God. I know I have had times where I thought the LORD needed me to tell Him how to correct something, to heal someone, to allow someone else to see their wrongness in a circumstance. Some of those requests go answered but only temporarily.

he turned to me and heard my cry.

God heard David’s cry, He also hears our laments for the needs of our families, our friends,  our nation, and our world. God does this out of His compassion for us, His children.

He lifted me out of the slimy pit.

The Lord brought David up from the sin that had engulfed him. He does the same for us if we ask Him to. When we seek God with our whole hearts, He hears and sees our sincerity and honors those requests.

Out of the mud and mire,

When the LORD saw David was in a terribly bad circumstance, He took David out of that terrible mess.  One of the scenes of western movies and television show is when full-grown men get into a fistfight on a wet and muddy street. When the men get knocked down into the mud, I cannot help but think how difficult it would be to get all that mud off them and their clothes.

he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.

God gave David a foundation. One that was firm. He allowed David to stand, not lie down. The Lord does the same for us when we seek His guidance out of a difficult problem. As we turned onto the interstate to go to Indy for my appointment with my surgeon recently. My eyes caught the “Fingers of God” in the sky. That scene followed us almost all the way down the road to our destination. That scene and its message was my rock and the firm place I can stand on. My surgeon pronounced me healed.

He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God

David wrote a number of praise passages to the LORD. I can confidently speak of God’s goodness to me and praise God for all He has done and will continue to do for me.

Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.

We do not know how many people saw David and the LORD through him. All those who read the Psalms get a glimpse of David’s thankfulness and devotion to God. I trust that people I meet will see God through me and that they desire to know Him.

New Mercies

Zazzle

Because of the LORD’S great love we

are not consumed

for his compassions never fail.

they are new every morning;

great is your faithfulness.

Lamentations 3:22-23 (NIV)

What is Jeremiah telling us in this passage?

We know we live in a world that is upended by strife and dissension. However, we have a God who loves us, protects us, and stands with us as we go through our daily lives.

Because of the LORD’S great love, we are not consumed,

God loves each of us as if we were the only person in this world. His desire is to keep His children safe.

For his compassions never fail.

God’s love and grace always come through each time we request His help for any circumstance we find ourselves or our loved ones.

They are new every morning.

On each dawning day, God brings to His children many blessings. Some of these come in the form of blessings. We have so very much to be thankful for. Jeremiah tells us there are many of these mercies. Each day we must be mindful of each of God’s compassions to us.

great is your faithfulness.

Yes, God is always faithful to us. I find it especially comforting that He exercises this attribute even when we are not. Sometimes, I get bogged down in my own issues and forget that God is in control. He waits for me to get it through my head that He is beside me, ready to guide me through the problem.

Please think about how often God has been faithful to you, even when maybe you were not.

Giving Thanks

womenlivingwell.org

This is the month we concentrate on being thankful for what God has given us. We sometimes concentrate on the big things He has given us. Let us look at the gifts He gives us that we sometimes overlook.

He has given us salvation. Jesus saved our souls from our sins. We know where we would be if we had not turned our lives over to Him.

He has given us peace. As I write this, I sit in my living room facing major surgery. If I would tell anyone who asks me about being scared that I was not, I would be less than truthful. Yes, I was momentarily afraid because of the shock of hearing a term related to a serious illness.

He gives us love. God loves us. He loves us as we are. Jesus tells us to love one another. We are to love those around us. However, we do not have to like their behavior.

He gives us guidance. Because He loves us, God wants to help us through the difficulties we face in life. During this year (2020), we have had to do things differently. Our church had “drive-through” communion during the shutdown we had this spring. A man who grew up in our church and his wife had a “drive-through” birthday party for their son when he turned four years old. Because of the increase in COVID numbers, our city schools have had to go virtual again to educate our children. God has had to guide those who had to make these decisions.

God gives us comfort. When God’s children face difficult times, He speaks words of comfort into their hearts and eases their hearts and minds. That special friend of ours lost her husband last week. Before he died, she seemed confused about the best thing to do for him. Her dad called us the next afternoon. I inquired about how she was doing. When she came back from the hospital, she seemed calmer than she had been. She has a strong faith.

Jesus Prayed Alone

See the source image
dailyverses.net

In those days he went out to the mountains to pray,
and all night he continued to pray to God
Luke 6:12 (ESV)

Jesus had a communication line with his Father. He made use of it regularly. In this passage, Luke speaks of one crucial time, the night before Jesus chose the twelve Apostles. He needed to choose some of his followers as special members of his ministry team.

Jesus must have felt the need to make this a matter of prayer. This was no small need. These men would form the nucleus of his earthly ministry. He continued in prayer. His praying was not a simple sentence, one-time utterance. He prayed repeatedly all night long.
His Father honored that prayer. After Jesus’ resurrection, eleven of these chosen men and another one would carry His message to all parts of the known world. We would not have Christianity in  the world today if Jesus had not prayed for guidance and the wisdom to make the right choices.

Yes, Jesus chose Judas Iscariot as one of the twelve. Could it be possible that God allowed Jesus to choose him because it was in God’s plan that early to use this person in His plan to bring Jesus back to heaven?

Jesus Asks A Blessing

See the source image
anakainoo.com

And taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven and said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all. And they ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of then fish. And those who at the loaves were five thousand men.
Mark 6:41-44 (ESV)

In this story, Jesus asked for God to bless the food that a small boy willingly gave to Him in order to attempt to feed 5,000.

I wonder; did Jesus say an extended prayer over this food, or did he just ask for God to bless what He had? All we know is that God blessed that meager offering many times over.

Everyone who ate was satisfied. They were no longer hungry. There were leftovers, quite a lot of bread, 12 baskets full. We are not told how many fish were in the baskets. Must have been a lot.

What does this miraculous story tell us? It might tell us to trust Jesus and let Him do the work when we have difficult issues facing us. It may tell us to be thankful in all things, no matter how devastating they look.

What would Jesus Do?

Sallman
In 1896, Charles Monroe Sheldon, authored a book entitled, “In His Steps, What Would Jesus Do?” In his novel, Sheldon wrote of a church that had become ‘comfortable’ in their Christianity. The church had a visitor on a Sunday. The man was, by today’s terminology, homeless. The pastor was appalled by the was the congregants received him. The pastor mobilized the congregation and some of the townspeople to follow Jesus' way of dealing with the issues of their time.

The subtitle became a watchword for people in the 1990s. Everyone of a certain age seemed to sport bracelets or wristbands with the letters WWJD, meaning ‘What Would Jesus Do?’ Over time, the idea died out.
Recently, that phrase came to my mind. I prayed a request to God for a long time. As I began to pray that evening, I heard “What would Jesus Do?” My sometimes-analytical mind broke it down into four different questions. Here is the breakdown:

What would Jesus do?
            Teach
            Preach
            Heal
            Forgive

What would Jesus do?
            Would He argue?
            Would He love the sinner?
Would He allow Himself to be distracted from his job?
            Would He obey His Father?

What would Jesus do?
            Jesus, the Son of God,
            Jesus, our Redeemer,
            Jesus, our Savior,
            Jesus, our King,

What would Jesus do?

            His Father’s work
            Stand for His Father

As a large group of people across the world wait for the answer to their prayers, we must think about this timeless question. What Would Jesus Do?

God’s Will

cecelialester.com

nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will. Matthew 26:39 (ESV)

“I prayed for God to heal him. Why didn’t He answer my prayers?”
“Why did God have to take her from her family?” I asked these questions when He took someone in my extended family.

The first time came after my uncle passed from this earth. I was angry that God had not done as I asked. Later, a co-worker and friend said something to me about God’s will. I found myself opening my heart to her. “I won’t pray for His will ever again. He let my uncle die.” Her response has stayed with me these four decades.  “God’s will gets done no matter what we want. He is sovereign.”

The second time I felt discouraged was when God took my husband’s niece. She was older than we were. She had granddaughters who needed her guidance. I had prayed for her as I sat in the hospital ICU room. I drove her daughter down to the hospital in Indianapolis twice- once when she was life-lined there. And again, in the wee hours of the next morning. I held onto hope when the doctors said there was none.

A few weeks after her service, my husband and I stopped at a neighborhood convenience store. He went in to get something. As I sat in the car, a young man from our church exited the store. He came over to my car and spoke to me. He asked how I was doing. I told him what had happened and that I was emotionally down and why I felt that way. His response also has stayed with me since then. “God may have done what was best for her.”

I learned a lot about God’s will from these conversations. The biggest lesson is that when we pray for God’s will, we can’t tell Him what that is. We can only request that our wish is heard.

Strength

http://wallpapers-xs.blogspot.com/2012/03/hour-glass-wallpapers.html

The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty, yet the span is but toil and trouble, they are soon gone and we fly away. Psalm 90:10 (ESV)

God gave Moses these words in a prayer. The LORD desires that His children live 70 to 80 years. In our lives here on earth, we have work and difficult times.

Those times of “toil and trouble” build our character and give us the strength to face those later years we are on this earth.

The toil we face can be the way we provide for our family’s needs. I have a friend whose one grandson began a new job last week. That job is a 12-hour day-seven day a week job. It is somewhat seasonal but he will be able to care for his family’s needs better.

The trouble might mean the evil done by men to other men. It can also mean the logical end of man’s own bad choices. Yet another interpretation is the prevalence of disease in our world. Another friend of mine lost her daughter to heaven a few years ago, the daughter was in her late 50’s; she had an inoperable brain tumor. Yet another much younger friend lost her daughter to heaven from brain tumors. This daughter was eleven years old.

We discover that the older we get; the faster time seems to go. Yes, those years soon go into our memory banks. Those memories come to the forefront of our minds when we need them. God uses them to comfort us or to teach us a lesson He has for us.

On a day, usually appointed by God, we go to meet Him and His Son.

Summertime is VBS Time.

The past three evenings, our church had Vacation Bible School. Our theme this year was Cave Quest. The picture to the right is the entrance of a cave a trio of men created for us. It is on the dais at the front of the sanctuary.  The kids really seemed to like the decorations and the lessons.

Our Children's Ministries Director started us thinking about VBS in February. She assembled her craft ladies, her registration ladies, her snack ladies, utilized our youth as part of the crew leaders. The rest of the crew leaders were women, most of whom had done it in years past.

Last Friday, the director's mother had to be taken to the ER and was admitted to the hospital. She had a gallbladder attack. Saturday morning, we were to start decorating the church. The director called me and told me she wouldn't make it to the meeting. We decorated the Christian Education wing hallways. This is one wall we managed to do on Saturday.  A dear friend finished it up with bats, the flying kind, placed every so often.

On Sunday, we learned that the director's mother was going to have surgery at noon. We were to meet at 2:30 to finish decorating the church. Several of us were there for three hours and created more cave walls. The fellowship hall and the hall leading to it were covered like the above picture. Again, final touched of moths, and bats were added.

On Tuesday night, our pastor dressed like a spelunker and gave lessons on Jesus being the light of the world. One of the smaller rooms of the church was made to resemble a dark cave. He gave all the kids glow sticks because Jesus' light will not go out and does show in this dark world.

This was my station. I pre-register and register kids. I had three women who were going to help me. However, one of them has a brother who had heart surgery on Monday.

Our director is ready to loan us out to other churches to teach how to have a successful Vacation Bible School.  On Sunday, there is a closing program during our main service. Following that, there is an all-church picnic. Those children who came to Bible School and their parents and siblings are invited to attend the worship service and picnic.

God was with us during the planning, the decorating and the Bible School.
